The Alexandra residents who spend three days each week as part of the Rand Aid Association-run centre’s Zamokuhle outreach programme cooked up a storm alongside staff members. Fondly called the gogos, these senior citizens usually spend their time at Thembalami enjoying a meal cooked for them by the centre, getting health advice and spending time interacting with their peers. However, to mark Heritage Day, a handful of gogos instead donned aprons and lovingly cooked for the residents and staff, as well as the other Zamokuhle participants.
Massive pots released delicious smells as the cooks prepared chicken curry, beef stew, samp, dumplings, sweet pumpkin, tripe, chakalala and other South African food to be enjoyed by all at lunchtime.
The event was colourful, inclusive, and representative of South Africa’s cultural diversity, with everyone dressed in an amazing arrange of traditional clothes.
