Timbali farmer dies after lightning strike

In a tragic and unusual incident yesterday a young women died after she was struck by lightning. The tragedy occurred at Friedenheim, a farming operation owned and run by the Timbali Technology Incubator.

Thirty-year-old Siphiwe Sgirivao Mandlazi was a seasonal farmer who worked mostly in the nursery on the farm. She is survived by her sister, Jabulile Mandlazi, and four children.

According to Busisiwe Mkhize, spokesperson for Timbali, the incident happened at around 14:15 yesterday afternoon. “Siphiwe was working in the field when there was a flash lightning and she collapsed.”

Timbali’s first aider rushed to help her but could feel no pulse and ER24 was contacted. The paramedics arrived within 15 minutes and resuscitated Siphiwe. She was taken to Mediclinic Nelspruit and admitted to ICU where, sadly, she passed away about half an hour later.

“Siphiwe had only been with us for a year, but she was a valued and loved member of the Timbali family,” says Busisiwe. “Our hearts go out to her family and children.”

Busisiwe says that trauma counselling has been made available for the Timbali staff.
