Comfortable, bold designs with a timeless elegance will dictate this year’s Decorex Designer Spotlight as Cape Town-based interior design team, Mariano Rossouw, curates an innovative living room space for this popular installation. The inspired work of these design experts will feature at Decorex Cape Town, sponsored by Plascon, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 27 April to 1 May.
The journey to Decorex
The company was founded in 2012 by the award-winning design duo, Tony Mariano and Danie Rossouw, both of whom graduated from the renowned KLC School of Design in Chelsea, London. Italian-born Mariano initially pursued a career in fashion retail before relocating to Cape Town in 2005 where he entered interior design with The Glen Boutique Hotel in Seapoint as his first project.
While Mariano had a background in the arts, Danie Rossouw only entered the industry after practicing as a dentist in London for a decade. While travelling, he decided to follow his passion for interior design, initially working own renovation projects until he finally made the career change in 2011. Mariano and Rossouw studied and worked on a number of design-school projects together and, following various internships at prestigious London studios, relocated to Cape Town to establish Mariano Rossouw.
In 2013 their team was joined by BHC Design School graduate, Amie Bishop, whose creative talent, industry experience and CAD (computer-aided design) skills have made her an integral part of the team. The organisation has been further strengthened with the addition of Catherine Richards in 2016, fulfilling the significant role of office manager and project co-ordinator.
Decorex Designer Spotlight
“We’re very excited about featuring at Decorex for the first time!” said Rossouw. “We have chosen to showcase a living space accessorised with two new European brands which we are launching through our studio.”
The two new product lines include ‘Sophia’, a timeless, hand-made brand originating in Greece which seamlessly merges classic and modern design. The second is ‘Sirius’, a range of flameless LED candles and lighting accessories from Denmark that provide a luxury, eco-friendly alternative to regular lighting options.
“Design-wise, we are collaborating with one of our favourite brands – Roche Bobois – as it epitomises our design and style vision for interiors,” continued Rossouw. “The living room was selected as it is a space where you can play with design, incorporating a variety of styles that reflect your personality.”
He said the feature will aspire to be sensory experience that leaves visitors feeling excited and inspired. “Our style is timeless, authentic, bold and innovative and we will be incorporating these elements into our selection of furniture, textures, accessories and colours to reflect the ‘rhythm of life’.”
The furniture designs of Roche Bobois imitate the movements in nature, bringing together art and life – an ‘art de vivre’. This movement continues in the curving design of the Vibrato Angled Floorlamp and the iconic Bubble Sofa that represents the perfect balance of design, innovation, function and emotion. The designs of Sophia are colourful, bold and full of life – a reinvented classical representation of the human form reflecting the beauty, strength and grace of life.
Keeping it on-trend
While Mariano Rossouw are not beholden to trends, they do gravitate towards ‘timeless, individual style and interiors’ and have taken note of some 2018 trends that resonate with their design ethos. These include:
- ‘Maximalism’ with bold colours and patterns – a move away from Scandinavian minimalism that has dominated in recent years.
- Comfort spaces – boundries between work and leisure are becoming increasingly blurred in hospitality, retail, office and beyond.
- Design with purpose – an increase in sustainable surfaces that eschew the stereotypical ‘recycled’ aesthetic.
- Terracotta – the rich, earthy colour now adorns textiles, ceramics, tiles and architectural features.
“The work by Mariano Rossouw draws on global design ideas which are then interpreted, not only at a local level, but further perfected for the individual,” explained Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Decorex SA. “They view design as more than just the aesthetic, but rather a way for us to speak to the world. For the Decorex Designer Spotlight, they have planned a really outstanding living room space and I’m sure everyone who visits the installation will get a real feeling for the talent of this interior design organisation.”
This vibrant Decorex Designer Spotlight forms part of a full line-up of innovative décor, design and lifestyle features which reflect this year’s #rhythmoflife trends, all taking place at Decorex Cape Town, sponsored by Plascon.
