Soothing tones, creative designs and inspired furniture are featuring at Decorex Cape Town – presented by Plascon – as four leading designers have crafted the exceptional Rooms to Grow feature, showcasing at Cape Town International Convention Centre from today (27 April) to Tuesday, 1 May.
“Rooms to Grow is a really innovative feature that gives visitors a look into the on-trend options available for the baby’s nursery, toddler, tween or teen bedrooms,” said Creative Director of Decorex, Anita Bloom. “Decorating a child’s bedroom is a wonderful way for parents and children to connect. It’s a project that encourages the child’s input, with the parent’s direction, and allows both parties to express themselves in a truly creative way.”
The Rooms to Grow feature welcomes some of the area’s top suppliers and designers, including Rad Kidz Baby & Kids Furniture for the nursery; Clever Little Monkey for the toddler’s room; Duett Kids’ Furniture for the tween’s room and The Room Growing Furniture for the teen’s room.
In the Nursery
Beginning in the nursery, visitors will be transported to a space of muted tones and serene designs in the first of these nurturing environments.
“I have chosen to incorporate white, natural wood grains, grey and a touch of rose gold,” explained Riyad Coenraad of Rad Kidz Baby & Kids Furniture. “I have specifically chosen these colours not just because they are currently trending, but to create a beautiful, ‘modern classic’ yet timeless nursery. I love to design so all the pieces displayed will be a completely new design built specifically for Rooms to Grow. I also wanted to include the natural environment and will bring this through by using a wooden influence – wood is an incredibly grounding element that creates a calming environment. The pieces will consist of all the key items required to set up a nursery. I believe in creating quality, functional and beautifully-designed pieces that will serve the client for years to come, which means an emphasis on quality.”
Having fashioned stunning furniture items for clients across the country, as well as the international market – Ireland, Australia and China included – over the past decade, Coenraad has seen many trends come and go, however, certain elements have remained.
“The classic style of furniture is coming back, although this really isn’t for everyone,” he explained. “People continue to select investment pieces of furniture that can be modified to adapt as the child grows – such as the cot which can be converted into a toddler bed. Overall, the furniture styles are fairly standard with some minor adjustments here and there whereas the colour palette and décor options tend to change quite dramatically over the years.”
Clever Little Monkey – South Africa’s leading ecommerce store for kids’ furniture, bedding and décor – have also incorporated natural elements into the Toddler Room décor.
Yulande Roxburgh of Clever Little Monkey, said that solid wood or wood finishes, with colour dips for furniture, are becoming more prevalent than ever. “We’re also seeing 100 percent cotton rugs and bedding incorporating soft pastels and natural references to bring children back to nature. For this one we’ve selected Beijing Moon for our colour scheme.”
The toddler room features Clever Little Monkey’s magical take on underwater themes for toddlers, including the full Flexa Play range from Denmark in a new colourway (including grey) and showcasing the newly launched high-back chairs and storage bench with the high back. They are also using this space to launch the newly-landed Ocean rug range – 100% cotton and machine washable – from ever-popular Spanish brand, Lorena Canals.
“Our stand features beautiful hanging jellyfish alongside gorgeous mermaid and sea-inspired décor in beautiful underwater colour tones – greens, blues, lilacs and shimmers – to create a magical underwater story. Visitors to this feature also stand a chance of winning one of the stunning Flexa Play Beds and nightstand worth R5 000.”
Duett Kids’ Furniture has taken on the design of the imaginative tween’s room and have chosen to display its popular Loft Bed while also bringing texture and bright colours, selected from Plascon’s prism of colours – among them Turkey Dimple, Downy Duckling and Cabana.
Explaining this unique space, Kimberley Snook said: “Tweens want somewhere they can express their individuality, a space that they can mark as their own. The personality of the individual must direct the design, as this is their own space, reflecting their unique style and personality. It needs to be a place that achieves a happy medium – here homework must meet play.”
They are using the Decorex platform to launch their latest Beginner Bed – the youngest in the collection. This special design can be added to, creating any of their other beds on offer, keeping up with the child’s growing needs.
“This creates a fun, fresh, contemporary space for an independent tween,” said Snook. “We have used our Duett range of kids’ furniture to create a multi-functional space suitable for play, sleep and study.”
For this innovative space, The Room Growing Furniture are showcasing their vibrant furniture range in a white and grey colour palette that is coming to the fore in design and décor.
“We feel that furniture should at all times be functional and practical in both small and large rooms,” explained Shirley du Plessis of The Room Growing Furniture. “Optimising space is always our consideration which is why fitted furniture is a preferred choice – it will create significantly more storage space due to its tailor-made qualities. We build furniture with a view of ‘expanding’ throughout the growing years as opposed to replacing items.”
True to their style, The Room has created a unique atmosphere within the Rooms to Grow feature, bringing a timeless feel through personalised design, colours and textures. For the teen room setting, they have incorporated bespoke bedroom furniture in line with the current feeling that a bedroom is not just a place to sleep.
“The bedroom has become a private sanctuary where we tend to spend much more of our time,” she explained. “We’ve noticed that teens, especially, see their bedroom as a safe haven – a place to relax but also to study. With this in mind, we are looking to expand our range of conventional desks, bookshelves and storage items to have a more modern look and feel about them. Double beds are also increasingly popular among teens.”
Commenting on the influence of colour on the developing psyche, Claire Bond, Plascon Brand Ambassador and Colour Specialist, said: “The impact of a colour choice for décor cannot be understated and we really welcome this forward-thinking Rooms to Grow feature onto the Decorex Cape Town programme. The environmental influences during the formative years are immense and we are definitely seeing more subtle, subdued tones – greys, whites and neutrals – with just a splash of creative-inducing colour in the younger age groups. This creates a comforting space for young minds that are having to process so much sensory information daily. As the child matures, there are much bolder colour selections with parents involving youngsters in the colour selection as a way to express their individuality.”
