Her heritage is all-important to Northern Cape crafter Tshepiso Iris Morometsi (30).
The Kuruman resident completed a National Diploma in Fine Arts at the Vaal University of Technology.
“I reflect on my history and my spiritual journey. I have my own sacred place where I connect with ancestors,” she says.
It is this link she so strong feels with that which came before that motivated the pieces that she has submitted to this year’s Innibos National Craft Awards.
The use of hands or the clapping of hands is used in ukuphahla, which is a ritual used to communicate with one’s ancestors, she explains.
“In most cases, my sculptural works are made from recycled materials and anything that is related to my spiritual journey, such as beads, fabrics, candles and goat skins,” she says.
Last year, Tshepiso’s Rootz Art Gallery was selected by My Arts International to exhibit artworks in the Ukraine and Denmark. “We have also been invited to exhibit at Africa Week in the Ukraine this year.
“I enjoy what I create; I am always eager to learn more and I love to express myself,” she says.
