Routine: A cornerstone of recovery from substance use disorder

Substance use disorder (SUD) can disrupt every aspect of a person’s life, leading to chaos, instability and a loss of control.

This is according to Adèl Grobbelaar, the manager of SANCA Wedge Gardens SUD treatment centre, who says that one of the most effective tools in recovery is the establishment of a routine.

“A routine provides a structured framework that can help individuals break free from the destructive patterns associated with addiction,” she adds.

As addiction often involves unpredictable and chaotic behaviour, routine offers a sense of predictability and stability.

“Knowing what to expect every day helps our clients to reduce stress, anxiety and cravings,” says Adèl.

A well-structured routine can also encourage the adoption of healthy habits, including regular exercise, balanced meals and adequate sleep.

“These healthy changes can help to not only improve physical health but also contribute to mental and emotional well-being,” says Adèl.

“Routines can also help people to set and achieve goals, both short- and long-term. By breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps, those struggling with SUD can begin to feel a sense of accomplishment and progress, which can boost motivation and self-esteem,” she adds.

Adèl says routines can involve activities that promote social connection, such as attending support groups, participating in community events or spending time with loved ones. These connections can provide emotional support and help individuals feel less isolated.

“Routines can also help to reduce the risk of relapse by addressing underlying issues that may contribute to substance use. For example, boredom, loneliness and stress can be triggers for relapse. A structured routine can help to fill these voids and provide healthy coping mechanisms.

“By providing structure, promoting healthy habits, fostering a sense of purpose and encouraging social connection, routines can help people stay on track and achieve long-term recovery.”
