Don’t settle for inconsequential gifts for Father’s Day this year, rather choose to make this Sunday, 19 June a really meaningful celebration by giving the ‘old man’ a memorable experience. And on the mid-South Coast – with its warm water ocean, epic natural splendour and many outdoor excursions – there’s something to treat every dad.
“Whether you’re celebrating your father or a father figure in your life, it’s time to ditch the meaningless consumer goods and give him something that he’ll cherish for years to come – a special bonding experience together,” said Annien Koulountis, Resorts Manager at Rocky Bay Resorts. “Rocky Bay, which is an incredible seaside town on the mid-South Coast, caters to those looking for a family-friendly adventure that offers something a little bit different. We’ve put together our list of the eight best ways to spoil dad this Father’s Day with minimal effort.”
1. Diving or snorkelling
Swimming among sharks, rays and all manner of big game fish is undoubtedly one of the best adventures to share with dad this Father’s Day – but why not enjoy the experience in one of the world’s top dive sites? Aliwal Shoal was rated one of the top 10 dive sites by the legendary Jacques Cousteau himself, and it’s made accessible through a number of charters, including Mokarran Dive Charters. Located within Rocky Bay Resorts, this full-service charter takes guests out on a fantastic diving excursion, or – for the less adventurous – boat rides are on offer as well. With the annual Sardine Run in the winter months, this time of year is that much more exciting for divers and seafarers. Those who prefer to remain closer to shore can discover marine life snorkelling in the rock pools at Granny’s Pool during low tide.
2. Shark diving
Take it up a notch by getting immersed in the world of blacktips, duskies, Zambezi, spinner and tiger sharks at Aliwal Shoal all from the safety of the shark cage. Shark Cage Diving KZN, which is located at Rocky Bay Resorts, takes guests out in a four-man, stainless-steel shark cage which is SAMSA approved and designed by an engineer for diver and animal safety. Guests get a close-up experience from the diving cage which is secured to the boat at all times. This is another great opportunity to enjoy the Sardine Run from the sea, with no dive experience needed!
3. Deep sea fishing
There’s no better father-child bonding experience than a day spent out at sea, casting a line and hoping for a catch! Albacore Fishing Charters, situated at Rocky Bay Resorts, boasts decades of experience in both fishing and boat charter, with seven charter boats available. Fishing this spot on the mid-South Coast during the Sardine Run (also known as The Greatest Shoal on Earth) is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Father’s Day.
4. Mountain biking and running trails
When it comes to mountain biking and running trails, there’s no place better than the mid-South Coast! Even for families who are new to the sport, it’s a really great way to bond and experience the incredible natural scenery of this region. One great option is Rocky Bay Resorts Mountain Bike Trails which consist of not-too-challenging 12km and 19km trails alongside the more challenging 29 and 39km trails. These trails actually form part of the epic Sani2C and Joburg2C biking competitions. The on-site Saddle Shack hires out bikes to guests. There are also the 4km, 6km, 8km and 10km running trails for those who prefer the adventure on foot.
5. Bird watching
For dads who prefer to take more leisurely strolls, binoculars in hand, while on the hunt for those elusive, feathered friends, the mid-South Coast is a birders’ haven! Rocky Bay, with its coastal forests and many nature trails, sets the perfect backdrop for bird watching, with more than 250 species identified in these parts. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset, with a checklist of birds available at the Rocky Bay Resorts reception.
6. Braai time
Nothing quite says a Father’s Day in South Africa like a seaside braai – and Rocky Bay Resorts is just the spot! Those staying at Rocky Bay Resorts Caravan Park and log cabins have access to a braai stand adjacent to the enticing Indian Ocean, making this the ideal weekend-getaway for Father’s Day.
7. Great dining with a view
Treat dad to a really fantastic meal and an ocean view at the pub and grill restaurant, Dock 360, which can be found at Rocky Bay Resorts. In celebration of Father’s Day, Dock 360 has arranged a delicious special of 300g ribs and chips for R70 with a free SAB dumpy! There will also be live music performed by Shaune McCraig from 12pm to 4pm to create a great vibe! Contact 065 635 448 for more information.
