Gateway’s finance manager shows solidarity with cancer patients

When Gateway’s finance manager Shabana Girdharilall stepped up to have her hair cut at this year’s CANSA Shavathon, it was the result of a decision she had made years ago. Wanting to show her support for those battling cancer, she began growing her hair with the intention of donating it.

“Having been part of the Gateway family for 12 years and with the company for 17 years, this cause is close to my heart. I’ve been growing my hair for the past two and a half years, and donating it was a small gesture to show my support for those bravely fighting cancer. It is also my way of honouring the memory of loved ones we have lost. I hope this inspires others to contribute in any way they can to make a difference,” said Shabana.

The Shavathon, held on Saturday, 1 March, is one of CANSA’s most recognised fundraising initiatives in the province. Now in its 23rd year, the event invites participants to shave, spray, or donate their hair in solidarity with cancer patients. Gateway Theatre of Shopping has hosted the Shavathon over 15 times, demonstrating the centre’s commitment to supporting those fighting this life threatening illness.

Over R7,000 was raised at the event, with 23 people choosing to cut their hair, contributing a total of 5.75 metres of hair which will be used to make wigs for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. A team of 15 volunteers helped ensure the success of the event, which also saw numerous shoppers show their support by spraying their hair in exchange for donations.

According to CANSA, cancer affects one in four South Africans, making understanding and support for initiatives like the Shavathon vital. Prostate cancer is the most prevalent, followed by colorectal cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The most commonly reported invasive cancers among women in South Africa are breast, cervical, colorectal, uterine, and melanoma*.

Gateway has built a long-standing partnership with CANSA, supporting the initiative to create awareness and encourage community involvement. In hosting the event, the centre also aims create a meaningful experience for shoppers. Shabana’s personal commitment added a powerful message to this year’s event, demonstrating how small acts help make a big impact.
