Nyala launches purpose-led campaign at Crossroads Community Centre in partnership with Checkrite

Nyala launched its purpose-led campaign at the Crossroads Centre of Hope in Ekwazeni near Verulam Natal this week. The initiative – a partnership with retailer Checkrite – will see a portion of the selling price of every Nyala product purchased at any of Checkrite’s stores go directly towards supporting Crossroads and its beneficiaries.

Launched during Heritage Month, the Nyala Pride with Purpose initiative celebrates the power of individual acts of support and generosity to support and transform communities. It is a partnership between Nyala and local retailer Checkrite and will run until the end of March 2026. Throughout this period, a percentage of the selling price of every Nyala product purchased at Checkrite will be set aside to support local NPO Crossroads. The collective amount will be donated to Crossroads at campaign close-out – supporting the organisation’s vital work and contribution to the local community.

Speaking at the launch event, Sibongile Mooko, Premier Executive for Marketing, noted the transformative potential of the campaign, emphasising its roots of meaningful impact and cultural authenticity. “Today we are here to celebrate the collective power of community upliftment while honouring the authentic Zulu heritage that defines Nyala as a brand, as well as the communities we serve. This campaign turns everyday purchases into powerful acts of cultural preservation and community generosity,” she shared. “It empowers consumers to purchase with purpose. This is how we honour our heritage together and act as a catalyst for positive change.”

Mooko emphasised that this is not a CSI campaign: “The collective donations made at Checkrite till-points until the end of March 2026 will be contributed directly to Crossroads by Nyala. This is aligned with our commitment to support their remarkable contribution to this local community, and to further their critical work in this space.”

As an authentic KwaZulu brand, Nyala has long been synonymous with celebrating and preserving local legacy with authenticity and pride. “Nyala brings the richness of Zulu heritage and tradition into homes and communities across the region. Our brand purpose speaks to uplifting communities through authentic cultural connection and helping families maintain legacy pride while building their futures. Through this campaign, we’re making it possible for consumers to be part of something greater, where their individual purchases become an intentional contribution to both community upliftment and heritage preservation. In this way, we’re shaping collective destinies and futures.

The Nyala team worked closely with the leadership of Checkrite to identify a registered NPO that was making a meaningful and lasting difference in the community, especially in the lives of the most vulnerable.

“It was important to us that the impact of this campaign be felt directly at community level,” says [Checkrite Representative Name], Checkrite: job title. “Crossroads’ work is known throughout the region. Each and every day this dedicated team provides essential support through feeding schemes, micro-development projects, skills training and community upliftment projects. They create real pathways to empowerment for families, with a strong focus on orphaned and vulnerable children. As Checkrite, their vision perfectly mirrors our brand values, and we are honoured to walk this journey with them,” Spokesperson explained.

Mahendra Singh, Managing Director: Crossroads International, explained that the funds raised through this initiative will be used to purchase critical equipment needed at Crossroads’ support centres to enhance their feeding schemes and other community programmes. “This partnership is deeply humbling for us. It’s a powerful validation of the work we do. More than that, it’s a commitment to the lives and futures of the people we serve in our community. Through this support, we will be able to purchase the essential equipment needed to expand our feeding schemes and strengthen our support programmes.”

Ameen Aron, Checkrite’s spokesperson from Ops Divisional, shared that the initiative has already resonated with their customers: “At Checkrite, we’ve always believed in growing alongside our communities. Yes, we’re a retailer, but we are also neighbours and partners. This campaign is about more than giving – it’s about walking alongside Crossroads to build brighter futures while celebrating the rich heritage that defines our region.”

In closing, Mooko encouraged local community members to support the campaign: “Every time you purchase Nyala at Checkrite, you’re planting seeds of hope while honouring our heritage. It’s a way to make your everyday choice count: to support your community, preserve our cultural legacy, and ensure that the beneficiaries of Crossroads rise together. Because when we support communities with authentic purpose, we nourish not just families with authentic quality tasty products, but the very fabric of our shared heritage. Let’s continue building with pride together.”
