At STRONG PR, Marketing and Events, we often say that the best ideas rarely start in a boardroom. Sometimes they begin with something far simpler, a cup of coffee and a conversation.
That was exactly the starting point for the recent Volvo Trucks South Africa Kick-Off Conference and Top Achiever Awards, a dynamic conference experience brought to life through close collaboration between Volvo Trucks SA and the STRONG PR, Marketing and Events team.
From the very beginning, what stood out was the clarity and ambition of the Volvo Trucks team. The brief was simple yet powerful: they didn’t want another corporate conference. They wanted an experience their people would feel, something that would energise their leadership team and reinforce a shared commitment to performance.
For STRONG PR, Marketing and Events, the project became a true partnership.
“Great conferences are not built on stages and screens alone,” says event director, Herkie Du Preez. “They are built on relationships. When a client trusts you enough to brainstorm openly, challenge ideas and build something together, that’s when the magic happens.”

The theme of the conference centred on Olympic Performance, not as a concept, but as something tangible and lived. Delegates arrived in athletic gear and were welcomed with race bibs instead of name badges. Each session was supported by themed race packs designed to reinforce the content and messaging of the day.
The conference opened with an Olympic-style ceremony where Volvo staff performed the national anthem, followed by the lighting of the Volvo Blue Flame by the Managing Director, a symbolic moment that set the tone for the day’s proceedings.
One of the most memorable moments came inside Pack Life, a CrossFit training space at The Wanderers. Delegates initially believed they were about to begin a workout. Instead, they were presented with a timer and no instructions. The resulting confusion created the perfect platform to unpack lessons around leadership, communication and clarity under pressure, turning a surprising moment into a powerful learning experience.
The conference unfolded across the Wanderers precinct, creating an energetic and walkable leadership environment. Smoothie bikes, personalised coffee prints, orange slices and round-robin soccer activities reinforced the themes of well-being, teamwork and performance.
Sustainability also formed a key part of the design. Delegates received refillable glass water bottles, water stations replaced single-use plastic, and all furniture and décor elements were sourced from the STRONG Event Décor reusable inventory.
Behind the scenes, the STRONG team worked seamlessly to deliver the experience. Kelsey Ruhrmund led operations, Stephan Nel and the STRONG Event Décor team transformed the venue for the glamorous awards evening, while Ryan Hignett, Mika Stefano, Aimee Plank, Conan Ntuli and Adriaan van Vuuren ensured the design, presentations and video storytelling elevated every moment.
The result was a conference that delivered far more than a typical corporate gathering. Leaders left energised, teams connected more deeply and the strategic messages of the organisation were brought to life through experience rather than simply presentation.
STRONG PR, Marketing and Events specialises in corporate conferences, large-scale events and experiential brand activations, working closely with clients to turn ambitious ideas into memorable, high-impact experiences.
“Every conference should have a purpose,” adds Du Preez. “When you combine a clear vision with the right creative and production team, you can create something that people remember long after the final presentation ends.”
For STRONG PR, Marketing and Events, this project was another reminder that the best conferences are not built from a template, they are built through partnership.
And sometimes, they begin with a coffee.
